‘Radio en Concierto’ is an academic research on the recording and broadcasting of live music and its cultural heritage component.

It was a series of musical documentaries for radio that sought to have musicians tell their stories while transmitting their sound proposal and compositions performed in an exclusive concert for this program, recorded, mixed and mastered to be broadcast on radio.

Radio en Concierto is an initiative of Tathiana Sánchez and Diego Hoyos, which was born from performing acoustics for the program Magazín 91.9 of Javeriana Estéreo.

Radio en Concierto is an initiative that was born while the audio engineer Diego Hoyos and
I were doing music acoustic sessions to be broadcast on the radio show Magazin 91.9, which I led. We
noticed that radio musical programs lacked innovation, and they didn’t have new forms of
narrating the music, its diversity, and its stories. But, without a doubt, it had an incredible
heritage in the background. Also, we saw that music productions didn’t think to be broadcast
on the radio technology, losing a lot of sound properties when they were played through.

That’s why we decided to create ‘Radio en Concierto’ project, which became our bachelor thesis. It was based on a series of experiences focused on the concert’s realization and communication to support cultural heritage preservation and dissemination in Colombia.

Starting from the theory, we wanted to find a system that would help us propose a method to record and mix live performances to broadcast through the radio. The goal was to find new ways to record, mix, and create the narrative script based on interviews and sound archives, with the final goal to contribute to
preserving our country’s musical heritage.

The final product is this document that mixes music, audio sound engineering, communication,
radio narratives and radio productions’ composition theories. You can find the description of
five live music experiences and radio program productions, where we showed the evolution
that we had from the first approaches, and then the first concert until the third.

Here we offer the learnings and changes of a conservation process to finally recommend an interdisciplinary method to preserve and communicate traditions, sounds, and stories and feel it as it was still at the stage.
